Autumn asks more of a wine than summer does. There are roasts to match, stews to stand up to, and long evenings that reward a bottle opened slowly. This case gives you six wines for the season: two characterful whites, a rosé with enough weight to outlast the summer, and three reds. The reds run from a Languedoc classic to a serious second wine from one of Saint-Julien’s great names.
1x Le Petit Lion 2022, Saint-Julien
The second wine of Château Léoville Las Cases, from an outstanding Bordeaux vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot bring cassis, violets and cedar, with firm, polished tannins. Decant it for roast lamb or rib of beef, or lay it down and let it reward your patience.
1x Chablis Vieilles Vignes 2022, Daniel-Etienne Defaix
Old vines and patient ageing on the lees give this Chablis more texture than most, while keeping the region’s flinty, saline edge. A natural match for roast chicken, scallops or a creamy fish pie.
1x Domaine Le Sang des Cailloux, Doucinello 2023, Vacqueyras
Grenache-led Vacqueyras from a biodynamic estate whose vines grow among rounded pebbles beneath the Dentelles de Montmirail. Expect dark cherry, cracked pepper and wild garrigue herbs, with a fresh, almost stony finish. Pour it with a daube, sausages and lentils, or slow-cooked pork shoulder.
1x Moulin de Gassac, Albaran Vieilles Vignes Rouge 2024
Old-vine Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Moulin de Gassac range of the celebrated Mas de Daumas Gassac, grown on arid, bauxite-rich slopes. You get ripe blackcurrant, a touch of vanilla and warm, rustic tannins. Open it an hour or two before a rich stew or anything with wild mushrooms.
1x La Chapelle en Rose 2025, Château Saint-Jacques d’Albas
Named after the eleventh-century chapel beside the vineyard, this Grenache-led Minervois rosé has the body to carry well past summer. Ripe peach and crisp red apple make it lovely with charcuterie, roast chicken or a Friday-night curry.
1x Michel Gassier, Nostre Païs Blanc 2022, Costières de Nîmes
Michel Gassier’s tribute to his home soil: Grenache Blanc with Roussanne, Clairette, Viognier and Bourboulenc, half of it aged in barrel on its lees. White peach, orange zest and honeysuckle sit around a fresh core. Superb with pumpkin risotto, roast pork or monkfish.
