Product: 2024 Restless River, Pinot Noir, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley
We hosted Craig Wessels in the shop 21st May to taste through his new releases. In the past, we have mainly focussed on the ‘fine wines’ of Restless River, namely Ava Marie Chardonnay, Le Luc Pinot Noir and Main Road Cabernet Sauvignon. Craig and his wife Anne make wines that are 100% varietals, in the pursuit of purity and restrained elegance. The Klein Hemel is brand new this year; it’s a blend of the younger vineyards on the farm but vinified the same way as Le Luc. It’s made to give people the opportunity to enjoy the Restless River range without paying the single vineyard prices. What I loved about it is just how well it shows off the South African Pinot style:
Lovely bright vibrant nose, with benchmark South African allspice and tilled earth. There’s fresh red fruits cherry and loganberry which are all amplified beautifully on the mid palate with amazing depth and already beautifully interwoven tannins. It’s an even wine and would be my go-to option in a line up with German Spatburgunder and Central Otago Pinot to showcase international styles.
