Product: 2024 Produttori Di Manduria, Alice Verdeca, Salento IGT
Puglia, the region known as “the heel” of Italy, boasts roughly 6 indigenous varieties that are exclusive to this warm region. Verdeca is one of the whites and can be found dominating up to four local appellations. The funny thing about Verdeca is that it is genetically identical to Verdicchio, a prosperous variety found in the Marche region, 300 miles up the Adriatic Sea. The Produttori have no shame in acknowledging that cuttings of Verdicchio migrated South to their region where the warmer weather has seen it mutate and transform into what the locals call Verdeca. The vines are espalier trained (4 arms of fruit) and the juice sees only steel in the vinification. Acacia and grapefruit nose that opens up into honeydew melon with saline notes. This has a mellowing core with refreshing edges.
