Product: 2023 Skyphos Assyrtiko
The producer is a collection of grape growers based in the Macedonian region of Northern Greece. As a group, they are bound by their passion for sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking. Last summer we championed their Orange wine, but this wine is firmly a White. Only partial skin contact here but just enough gives this a deep lemon colour. I was struck by how concentrated and precise the lemon peel is here. A strong cursor for the Assyrtiko variety. Pine needles instead of salinity and dried herbs instead of flowers. The other marked observation is the alcohol. Only 12% and still perfectly ripe! Santorini on the other hand would easily yield alcohols of 13-14 abv, the island more commonly associated with Assyrtiko.
