Product: 2023 Garzon, Tannat Reserva
In 2007, Garzon was a 700-hectare olive farm on the Atlantic coast of Uruguay. The owner invited consultant winemaker Alberto Antonini to visit. Alberto identified similarities between Galicia and Garzón regarding the cooling Atlantic breezes and granitic bedrock and thought it could serve Tannat, a highly tannic grape that demands a long growing season. Unlike Valdeorras, the granite in Uruguay is much rockier and littered with large boulders. They serve as an additional source of warmth for the grapes as they radiate heat absorbed from the sun. This Reserva wine does well to tame the austere tannins of the variety through gentle extraction and lots of oxygenation through fermentation. Oak is in the background to instead highlight the juicy blackberry fruit and plummy body of the wine. Capable of pairing next to anything roasted, the tannins are ripe and hidden in this purple wine.
