Product: 2023 Domaine Lafarge Vial, Fleurie, La Joie du Palais
The Beaujolais region is synonymous with granite. Particularly across the crus of the north like Morgon, Chiroubles and Fleurie. Most market Beaujolais (and Beaujolais Nouveau) on the other hand is sourced from the south of the region on alluvial soils which produces fruitier styles for early drinking. Whereas a cru like Fleurie with its PINK granite will produce a firmer style by comparison. Domaine Lafarge Vial is the joint venture of Frederic Lafarge and his with Chantal (who’s maiden name is Vial). This wine comes from a high altitude old vine site on slopes so steep (50%) that horse-plowing is required. The Lafarges recruit Max, a beautiful gray horse, for this purpose. Low yields and Burgundian vinification ensure piercing concentration of red peppercorn and loganberry. The high acidity accentuates the minerality which is balancing and enduring. A brilliant light bodied red.
