Sandwiched between Grand Crus, Combottes is in a slight dip with meagre soils that seem to give a unique style. It’s on the Morey side and, like the Grand Cru, has more attributes of Morey than of Gevrey. Exceptional concentration with rounded, cool, black fruits. A delightful softness of tannin minded me of tasting with Philippe Engel back in 2002. ‘Veloute’ or velvety was the term he loved to use in that vintage. Outstanding. 2031 to 2044
