This 2018 Pinot Noir is a beautiful pale brick-red colour. It might look more mature than you might expect for a 2018 New Zealand Pinot but this delicacy or colour and ethereal tasting quality is Hiroyaki Kusuda’s signature trait. Pure notes of red cherry hail from the exceptionally pretty nose, which is as intense and fragrant as if you were standing directly underneath a cherry tree in blossom. The fragrance builds the longer you swirl, enveloping the senses with its lifted, now slightly musky, cedarwood aromatics. Delicate savoury hints of toast and cured meat follow but there remains a deep, concentrated ball of ripe cherry fruit at its centre. This is a wine you could smell all day. The palate has a gorgeous cherry-focused core with a sensation of fruit that coats the palate but in an intangible way, not with any increase in the texture of the wine. It is almost as if the flavours exist purely as a scent in the mouth. Flavours of ripe raspberries and raspberry tea are supported by an earthy note which adds complexity alongside the touches of toast and cured meat. Yet it is cherry and raspberry tea flavours which persist, lasting indefinitely on the delicate yet inordinately long finish. The balance of this, as always with Kusuda, is stunning and perfection itself. What a beautiful, beautiful wine. Drink 2022-2030.
