Product: 2018 Chateau Pape Clement Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan
Château Pape Clément now produces one of the finest red wines in Pessac Leognan, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. They are also famed for their whites wines, so they have an interesting group of varietals on the estate including; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle.
A winery that is very much on the up since a major restructure in 1985 when Bernard Magrez took over - the standard of wines have increased considerably since the doldrums of the 1960"s and 70"s.
The 2018 vintage of Château Pape Clément is comprised of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc - aged in 60% new French oak. Another wine loved by the critics - and we were pleased to see our benchmark critic, Neal Martin, giving the Château Pape Clément 2018 94 points, commenting:
"The 2018 Pape-Clément has a very intense nose of blackberry, briar, cedar and crushed flowers. That showiness that I commented upon in barrel has ebbed away to reveal a most sophisticated nascent wine. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, layers of graphite-infused black fruit and a keen thread of acidity. An attractive touch of pitted black olive toward the saline finish leaves you wanting more. This deserves a decade in bottle, but it is a classy Pape-Clément that should age well over the next 30–40 years. Very promising. 2024-2050"
