Following two great vintages, 2017 had a lot to live up to and yet it did! The 2017’s are delicious; and though they are not as big or concentrated as 2015 or 2016, they have a gracefulness and soft silky tannins which give them unrivalled drinkability. It certainly was an easier year in the vineyards. The winter was cool and dry, but warmed up significantly to give way to an early spring. By Easter, the vines were already much advanced and we feared a repeat of the frost of the previous year. We came dangerously close in late April, but were spared. May was mild. Flowering occurred in good conditions at the end of the month as temperatures picked up. June was warm and sunny with long dry spells. The vegetative cycle which had started to lag made up for lost time. July was cooler and wetter but all was well until Morey St Denis was hit by hail on the 10th of July. The Monts Luisant saw the worst of it with the loss of half the crop and shredded canopy. Clos de la Roche, Clos Saint Denis and the Combottes were also affected, with a smaller loss of fruit and torn leaves. Thankfully, the growing conditions remained very good, allowing for the damaged berries to dry out and for vines to heal. August was warmer with little rain which greatly mitigated the impact of the hail. We picked the whites in Puligny on the 28th and 29th of August and waited to pick the Monts Luisants until the 6th of September. For the reds, we began on the 5th and finished on 12th September. The ripening conditions were excellent, and this was as healthy a harvest as could be. The fruit was beautiful, ripe with good acidity. Winemaking was very straight forward. We continued with very much the same ideas from the previous vintages: a lot of whole cluster and a delicate extraction. The resulting wines are splendid. The whites are very classic, full of energy and charm. The reds show plenty of spice and are fresh, transparent and silky, with great balance. - Jeremy & Alec Seysses
