The 2016 is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon; 17% Cabernet Franc; 12% Malbec; 6% Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot. The aromatics are cool, perfumed and spicy showing plenty of overt violet fragrance, cedar spice, cinnamon stick, pencil box and dried mint. There is no shortage of sultry black berry fruit complexity with seductive nuances of black currant, pithy black cherry and sun raisined cranberries. Medium bodied, the palate is wonderfully understated and elegant. An overall tendency towards elegance and classism rather than overt decadence. A thoroughly enchanting and engaging wine. (96+/100 Greg Sherwood MW)

Mvemve Raats is a critically acclaimed collaboration between friends and winemakers Mzokhona Mvemve and Bruwer Raats. Raats, the owner and winemaker of Raats Family Wines, is renowned for his exceptional Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc, while Mvemve, the first Indaba Scholarship recipient and a graduate of Stellenbosch University, brings his own expertise and vision. The two met while working at Delaire winery and, in 2004, joined forces to craft a consistent, top-quality wine free from the constraints of style, varietal, or tradition—blending their opinions, skills, and artistry. For over 20 years, Mvemve Raats has been at the forefront of South African winemaking, producing elegant and consistent wines, most notably their Bordeaux-style blend, MR de Compostella, which is widely celebrated as one of the country’s highest-rated wines. Known for its medium-bodied, balanced style, the blend prominently features Cabernet Franc—a variety Bruwer champions for its unique ability to combine the elegance of Burgundy, the spice of the Rhône, and the structure of Bordeaux. His approach to oak aging emphasizes harmony, ensuring the oak enhances rather than overpowers the wine.
