Product: 2016 Domaine des Comtes Lafon, Volnay Premier Cru, Les Santenots du Milieu
Domaine des Comtes Lafon has a stellar reputation and rightly so. The wines are of fantastic quality and precision, with biodynamic farming and technical winemaking. Though the whites are more famous, the reds are also world class and are yet to reach the stratospheric prices of the whites.
The Santenots 1er Cru, though labelled as a Volnay, is officially in Meursault (the vineyard’s Chardonnay is sold as Meursault and its Pinot Noir as Volnay). Because of this, the soil here is different to that of Volnay, it is compromised of harder limestone, has more iron content and is redder in colour, giving body and richness to wines from the site. As a result, Comtes Lafon makes their Santenots in a more reductive style, needing more ageing than most other Volnays. The result is a dark and powerful Volnay with deep flavours of dense fruits, white spices and a strong backbone
