Merchant Review NR
This important estate, totally planted by Dona Antonia Adelaide Ferreira on 270 hectares of barren common land purchased in 1877, was the last great achievement of the legendary Lady of the Douro. It is now owned by her great- grandson Francisco Olazabal Nicolau Almeida who is in charge of wine-making. Vines cover 65 hectares of the property and are planted in several types of soil - granite, alluvial and schist. This diversity, unusual in the Douro region, contributes to the complexity of the wines. "It is no exaggeration to say that the Douro has become one of the great table wine regions, not just of Portugal, but of the world." Tim Atkin MW, Observer Magazine, 18 November 2007. The previous vintage of Quinta do Vale Meao 2005 was rated 94/100 by Wine Spectator while the 2001 was voted their Top 100 Wine of the Year. A real collectable gem from the Douro. 95/100 by Wine Spectator 2008
