Puech Haut Wine Lunch

Puech Haut Wine Lunch

Jul 6, 2023by Charles Waud

After over a decade of the Waud Wine Club, it is remarkable that it has taken us this long to host a wine lunch for our Members and Guests....and what a lunch it was! We were pleased to have Jean Bernard Tison, Sales Director from Puech Haut, in the country to talk through the excellent wines from this estate over lunch at the Boot and Flogger wine bar - and institution based near London Bridge.

Our 29 participants enjoyed our best selling Argali Rosé 2022 on arrival, before we sat down for our 3 course lunch, that was paired with a new rosé to the list - Theyron Rosé 2022. This wine has a slightly different cepage to the Argali, with Grenache and Syrah, rather than Cinsault and Grenache. Next up was my favourite wine of the lunch, the Tête de Bélier Blanc 2022 - a stunning blend of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Rousanne and Viognier. This in my mind is essentially a wine in the same style as a white Chateauneuf-du-pape, but at a fraction of the price! Then onto the reds - we opened a Prestige Rouge 2020. This is a nice blend of Grenache and Syrah - and is very easy and uncomplicated. Jean Bernard was pleased to see that with a little bottle age, the wine is much improved - so if you have a little patience, you really do reap the rewards. Tête de Bélier Rouge 2020 was up next, a stunning wine made up of Carignan, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. Silky, elegant and very enjoyable indeed. Certainly a step up from the Prestige, but still at an accessible price point of £31.50 per bottle. Finally, the big gun wine of the outing - Clos du Pic Rouge 2017. A classic southern french blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. The palate is gorgeous, finding the right balance between power and elegance. Lovely fruit with a refreshing and long finish. 10/10 to finish on. We look forward to hosting our next lunch - it certainly was a very fun, social and loosely educational afternoon in fine company.

Until next time, Charles Waud
